The good news of Pentecost, 50 days after Easter, is that
“the wait”
is finally over.
“Wait in
Jesus instructs his disciples before he ascends into Heaven. So they wait. Suddenly the house wherein they are sitting is filled with the sound of a mighty wind (metaphor for Spirit)….and “tongues as of fire”(another metaphor for Spirit) rest upon each one of them.
They are filled with the Holy Spirit.
Astonishingly, they begin to proclaim the mighty works of God in foreign languages, understood clearly
By the many Jews living in
“What does this mean?” they marvel among themselves.
Pentecost means that God keeps God’s promise;
Pentecost means that the promised Spirit rests upon and within each and all;
Pentecost forges from a riot of human diversity: a new community --- “a welcoming miracle people” ---
Bound together in a common cause and a shared vision for God’s world.
And, thanks be to God, Pentecost means that the wait…is finally over.
